The end of an era – and the beginning of a maximum of exploitation of a legendary brand….. I am already hearing global fans crying, but George Lucas will be able to buy his own planet for USD 4 billion….
Revenue rose 6 percet to USD 9,6 billion in Q1 – profit even up 21 percent to USD 1,14 billion. The company´s movie studio swung to a loss of USD 84 million (the John-Carter write-down).
Quite interesting: The giant´s interactive division (mainly disney.com and Playdom) lost USD 70 million in the last quarter – which totals Disney´s losses in interactive media to USD 1,19 billion since 2008!
But the strength of Disney´s television portfolio still stes it apart from most of its media rivals.
A strong start to the U.S. summer movie season: “Marvel´s The Avengers” cashed in about USD 200 million at U.S. theatres over the weekend – and smashes the old record of Harry Potter.
This is an important win for Disney, as the last major release, “John Carter”, has prompted the company to take a USD 200 million write-down. Disney fired its movie chairman last month and has not yet announced a successor….
